Titian was an innovative High Renaissance artist who carefully considered the concept of portraiture, the role of women in the 16th century, and characteristics that defined an ideal beauty.  These women were depicted as ideal wives that would procreate to perpetuate a family name, a trait significant to noble families in power.  Facial features such as rosy cheeks and soft curves were characteristics that construed an ideal, beautiful woman.  Titian combined the portrait genre, gender roles, and an ideal beauty into one painting in order to create portrayals of women that are allegorical subjects and realistic characterizations.
